Mention rave and eyebrows recede into the hairline. But Bangalore is well on its way to being a rave hotspot. CASEY JOHNSON captures the spirit

A rave is a speakeasy under the night sky. No beer promotions, no quizzes, no insipid Whatchamacallit Nites. — AFP IT IS 2 a.m. and the disco crowd is spilling out of Spinn, F-bar and a dozen other nightclubs across the city. For the majority of partygoers it"s time for a cup of coffee and a quick bite to eat before bed. But for a growing number of twenty-something ravers, Bangalore"s much-hyped pub and club scene is just an appetiser. More than a party, the rave represents an underground culture of dance, drugs and trance music.

Getting there

Just getting to a rave is party in itself. After a bartender scribbles a map on a wet napkin, I am given two minutes to memorise the directions before it is snatched away and torn to unreadable shreds. Forty minutes later, the autorickshaw driver stops on a deserted stretch of highway and announces with finality: “Sir, this is the Tamil Nadu border. I can"t go any farther." Luckily the tail end of a rave caravan stops to pick me from the side of the road.

A Rs. 400 cover charge opens the front gate to an abandoned resort in the middle of a forest. The dance floor is a shallow amphitheatre ringed with rough-cut stone pillars and hung with black lights and glowing tapestries. It is like Stonehenge gone mad. And though it is cold enough to see your breath, 100 ravers are stripped down to T-shirts, dancing frantically to the quick and constant beat that characterises trance music.

Hypnotic music

It would be both cliché and redundant to describe trance music as hypnotic but with the first light of dawn, the crowd — some of whom have been dancing five hours without a break — are swaying and bouncing in perfect unison to a beat that the South African disc jockey promises to pump out until noon.

The early morning light reveals some 250 techies, college students, minor political party workers, bankers, fathers, and a mother of two who confides that she is having the time of her life. A handful of Caucasians and Africans are mixing freely; but the crowd is predominantly Indian upper-middle class.

And while a combination of amphetamines and Redbull is fueling the party, the allure of a rave is more than just LSD or Ecstasy. A rave is a speakeasy under the night sky. No beer promotions, no quizzes, no insipid Whatchamacallit Nites. It is a hedonistic mix of dance, drugs and defiance, organised and advertised almost entirely by word of mouth. “We don"t want these raves to get too big," says an engineer at a local IT firm. “Sometimes there are 50 people, sometimes 400. Size has never been the important thing."

Cult following

Whether or not size matters, the Bangalore rave scene is emerging as one of the hottest in India. “It"s definitely not Goa," says a student from Kathmandu, referring to the rave paradise of Asia, “but the scene is getting larger."

Along with hotspots like Pune and Hampi, Bangalore raves have been slowly gaining a cult following over the last five years.

Rotating locations

Presently, a rave is held every weekend at rotating locations, with some events attracting more than 1,000 people. The increase in size means organisers are moving farther from the confines of the city and the presence of police.

And what about the police? “Oh, you"ve gotta pay the cops," says the evening"s promoter. “There is no other way around it. We came out here a week ago, told the police what we were planning, and paid them off. We"ve taken care of everything."

An hour later the police arrive. By the time every vehicle is searched and every person questioned and released, it is time for lunch and a long, long nap.

பெங்களூர்: பெங்களூர் அருகை பண்ணை வீட்டில் போதை மருந்து ஏற்றி கொண்டு குத்தாட்டம் போட்ட, 110 பேரை கர்நாடக போலீசார் கைது செய்துள்ளனர். அவர்களில் 29 பெண்களும் அடங்குவர்.

பெங்களூர் நகருக்கு அருகில் இருக்கும் பண்ணை வீடுகளில் ஒளி வெள்ளத்தில், காதுகளை கிழிக்கும் அளவுக்கு அதிக சத்தத்துடன் ஸ்பீக்கர்களை அலறவிட்டு குத்தாட்டம் போடும் ‘ரேவ் பார்ட்டிகள்’ அதிகரித்து வருகின்றன. இங்கு வருபவர்கள் போதை பொருட்கள் பயன்படுத்துவது தெரிய வந்ததை அடுத்து போலீசார் தீவிர கண்காணிப்பில் ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றனர்.

இந்நிலையில் நேற்று பெங்களூரில் இருந்து 25 கிமீ., தூரத்தில் உள்ள ராமநகரா மாவட்டத்தில் இருக்கும் சுஞ்சனகுப்பே என்ற கிராமத்தில் உள்ள பண்ணை வீட்டில் ரேவ் பார்ட்டி நடக்கவிருப்பதாக போலீசுக்கு ரகசிய தகவல் கிடைத்தது.

இதையடுத்து அங்கு சென்ற போலீசார் அதை உறுதி செய்தனர். பின்னர் உயர் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு தகவல் தந்தனர். போலீஸ் படை குவிக்கப்பட்டது.

இதை தொடர்ந்து பண்ணை வீட்டுக்குள் அதிகாலை 4.30க்கு நுழைந்த போலீசார் அஙகு குத்தாட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு கொண்டிருந்த 29 பெண்கள் உட்பட 110 பேரை கைது செய்தனர். அவர்களில் 4 பெண்கள் உட்பட 39 பேர் வெளிநாட்டினர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. அந்த 4 பெண்களும் ஈரான், தான்சானியா மற்றும் பூட்டானை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என்பது விசாரணையில் தெரியவந்துள்ளது.

இந்த பார்ட்டியில் கலந்து கொண்டவர்களில் பலர் போதை மருந்து பயன்படுத்தியது தெரிய வந்துள்ளது. இதற்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த முகமது ஆடம் (21) மற்றும் நிதின் ஆகிய இருவரையும் போலீசார் கைது செய்தனர். பண்ணை வீட்டில் இருந்த லட்சணக்கணக்கான பணத்தை பறிமுதல் செய்தனர்.

போதை ஆட்டத்தில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட ஏராளமான மது, ஆபாச சிடி போன்றவைகளை போலீசார் பறிமுதல் செய்தனர்.

இது குறித்து போலீசார் ஒருவர் கூறுகையில், பல நாட்டை சேர்ந்தவர்களும் இந்த பார்ட்டில் கலந்து கொண்டுள்ளனர். இவர்களுக்கு எஸ்எம்எஸ் மற்றும் இன்டர்நெட் மூலம் அழைப்பு விடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதில் பங்கேற்ற அனைவருக்கும் மகடி அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் சோதனை நடத்தப்பட்டது. நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த ஆடம் என்பவன் நுழைவு கட்டணமாக ரூ 1500 வசூல் செய்துள்ளான். அவனை தொடர்ந்து விசாரித்து வருகிறோம் என்றார்.

39 foreigners among 101 arrested in raid on farmhouse near Bangalore

Bangalore: In an early morning operation on Sunday, a farmhouse at Tavarakere near here was raided by the police on suspicion that a rave party was on and 101 people, including 39 foreign nationals, were arrested. A huge quantity of liquor and over 40 vehicles, besides musical instruments, cash and cellphones were seized.

The party was organised at a farmhouse in Chunchanakuppe village, about 6 km from Tavarakere. Those arrested by the Ramanagara police included citizens of France, Germany, Iran, Sweden, Israel, Tanzania, Bhutan and other countries, who are aged between 25 and 30. A majority of the foreign nationals are students.

“Based on information, we raided the farmhouse around 4 a.m. and arrested 101 people, including 29 women, who were partying,” Ramanagara Deputy Superintendent of Police D. Devaraj told The Hindu. “Though we have not seized drugs from the spot, the arrested were subjected to medical examination at the Government Hospital in Magadi,” he added.

According to him, Mohammad Adam (21) of Sindhanur in Raichur district and a BBM student at a college in Kammanahalli here had organised the party. “We are interrogating Adam. Invitation to the party had been sent through short message services and websites. A sum of Rs. 1,500 was collected from each participant as entry fee,” Mr. Devaraj said.

“A well-known disc jockey from Delhi, believed to be popular in the party scene there, is among those arrested. The DJ has shared the stage with internationally renowned personalities and provided music in many parties in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Kolkota,” Mr. Devaraj said.

As the news of the party being busted by the police spread, a large number of people gathered at the farmhouse to get a glimpse of those arrested. Medical examination of the arrested was completed by Sunday evening and they were remanded in judicial custody. The farm owner is being questioned.

Another officer said that since liquor was being served without a licence, a case had been booked under the Excise Act against the participants and organisers. The arrested would be charged with relevant sections of the Excise Act, the officer said.

Meanwhile, relatives of the farmhouse owner said that they were not aware of the party activities.

“Some people from Bangalore contacted the owner and requested him to allow them to host a birthday party at his farmhouse, following which the party was allowed at the farm. The party organisers cheated us,” a family member said.

This is the second incident near Tavarakere where an illegal party has been raided. On August 9, 2008, Kannada activists raided a dhaba where a rave party was held, following which, 35 people were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

பணகுடி: பிரார்த்தனை செய்து கொள்வதற்காக சர்ச்சுக்கு வந்த பிளஸ்டூ மாணவிக்கு முத்தம் கொடுத்த பாஸ்டர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டார்.

நெல்லை மாவட்டம் பணகுடி அருகேயுள்ள வடக்கன்குளத்தை சேர்ந்தவர் எஸ்.நியூட்டன். இவர் அப்பகுதியில் விக்டரி அசெம்பளி ஆப் காட் என்ற சபையை நடத்தி வருகிறார்.

இதனால் மனமுடைந்த கிறிஸ்டி பணகுடி போலீசில் புகார் செய்தார். இதில் பாஸ்டர் நியூட்டன் எங்களிடம் தவறாக நடக்க முயன்றதுடன் சபைக்கு நாங்கள் செல்லாததால் அங்கு வருபர்களிடம் எங்களை பற்றி அவதூறு பரப்பி வருகிறார். எனவே அவர் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

இது தொடர்பாக சப்-இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் செய்யது நிஷார் அகமது வழக்கு பதிவு செய்து பாஸ்டர் நியூட்டனை கைது செய்து விசாரணை நடத்தி வருகிறார்.
